We went to Soho a while ago with London based DJ and producer Throwing Shade for a snap shoot featuring some items of our AW collection. She spoked to us about music and her new EP “Fate Xclusive”.
Hello! Can you tell us more about yourself and the story behind “Throwing shade”?
I’m a DJ and Producer from London, and I also present a radio show on NTS Radio. I’ve been making music and DJing as Throwing Shade for a couple of years now and it’s all been going well so far…!
Can you share your music background with us? How did it start?
Music has always been my favourite thing, ever since I was a little kid. My first musical obsession was Michael Jackson. I played a lot of music whilst I was at school – flute, piano, guitar – and then I also studied Ethnomusicology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, where I learnt the sitar, gamelan, and the Turkish reed flute called the Ney. I’ve always been making my own music on the side – I just never dreamt I would be doing it full time like I am now.
Some people describe you as “The Walking Musical Encyclopediva”. We’ve been listing to your show on NTS for a while and pretty amazed by your tracks lists. How do you convey that breadth of knowledge into your selections and your own music?
For me, one of the most important things about music is to be open-minded, and realizing that there is so much amazing music from all over the world. That’s the mindset with which I approach my NTS show – I want to share lots of incredible music, and play things that the listeners probably won’t have heard before. I think the music makes an even bigger impact when you know some information about it, so this is why I always try to contextualize the tracks by giving the listeners some background facts about it.
Your second EP “Fate Xclusive” just came out earlier this year, there is a track called “4drake” is getting a lot of attention. Are you a Drake fan (like us :DD)? What’s the idea behind the track?
Haha yeah I am a Drake fan! Basically, that is a hypothetical track I’ve made for Drake. It’s one of my musical ambitions to make a track for him one day… So I thought I would just give it a go, even though he’ll probably never hear it! Or who knows… I listened to a lot of his tracks as preparations, and made lots of notes on the kind of song structure he likes etc. Then I used all my ‘Drake research’ to make ‘4Drake’… It was a lot of effort!!
Apart from music, what do you do? What is your day-to-day now?
Right now I’m just doing music full-time, 24/7.
What keep you busy at the moment? Any exciting plan coming?
At the moment I’m working on music for a film soundtrack. I’ve also just finished a bunch of new tunes which will be released next year and I’m excited about that. I’m working on more new tracks and just also practicing my live show. I’ve got a few gigs coming up and I’m also going to be performing at SXSW Festival in Texas next year which is really a dream come true!
